what I like about mason jar salads

Mason jar salads are excellent for meal prepping. You can make them up to 4 days in advance and not worry about your ingredients getting soggy.

The combinations are endless. You can make just about any salad into a mason jar salad.

They take up hardly any room in the fridge or your lunch bag. Since they are vertical, they take up very little space at all.

tips, tricks, and faqs for mason jar salads

Mason jar salads are meant to be able to be meal prepped in advance while staying fresh for days.

In order for the salads to stay fresh and not get soggy, you have to layer the ingredients in specific order and secure it tightly with a lid.

I order the ingredients from wet to dry. Some people prefer to order them by density. I find that by starting with wet at the bottom, the lettuce never gets soggy.

I find that 1/4 cup of several of the ingredients works really well for covering a layer in a 32 ounce jar.

Does the mixed greens lettuce get soggy?

No. If you layer the ingredients correctly, use fresh lettuce, and seal it tightly, the lettuce will stay fresh.

What size mason jars do you use?

I use quart (32 ounce) size mason jars.

What brand of raspberry vinaigrette did you use?

I used Kraft Lite Raspberry Vinaigrette.

What brand of fat free feta did you use?

I used Athenos brand feta.

How does your fork reach the bottom of the jar?

With the size jar I use, the fork is taller than the jar. I have no issues reaching the bottom with my fork.

Will all the dressing stick to the bottom?

No. If you shake it thoroughly, it will stick to the ingredients and not to the bottom of the jar.

Once the jar is filled, is there room to shake it?

Yes. Once you start to shake the jar, the ingredients will shift and push the others around. There is plenty of room to shake the ingredients around inside.

Where do you find the plastic lids for your mason jars?

I buy mine on Amazon. They are listed on my favorite products page.

substitutions

raspberry vinaigrette – you could replace the raspberry vinaigrette with any berry flavored vinaigrette or even a poppy seed dressing would be great.

orzo pasta – any small shaped pasta would work well in this recipe. It doesn’t have to be an orzo salad, but the texture and size work really well.

feta – blue cheese and gorgonzola would also taste great in this.

berries – Use any combination of berries that you like, just be sure to layer them from wet to dry in the jar when it comes to ingredients.

chicken breast – you can replace the chicken breast with your favorite protein of choice. Adding fresh basil to your chicken would also taste great.

almonds – walnuts, pistachios, and pecans would all taste great in this salad.

how to store mason jar salads

It’s important to store them upright in the refrigerator until you’re ready to eat them. You can store them up to 4 days.
