This Crockpot Ranch Chicken is tender, shreddable, and coated in a creamy ranch sauce you’ll want to spoon over everything on your plate. It’s four ingredients, zero prep, and the kind of weeknight dinner that everyone will want in rotation.

I have been making this Crockpot Ranch Chicken for over 5 years in regular rotation. I’ve tried it several different ways, but the simple 4 ingredient version is the best one. I know it can feel like 4 hours isn’t enough, but trust me, with all of the testing I’ve done on this, it’s the correct amount of time.

If you cook it longer, you end up with that tough, stringy, dry chicken that everyone hates to see coming. At the 4 hour mark, you end up with creamy, tender, pull apart chicken every time.

There is a reason readers have rated this 4.96 stars! It’s a simple dinner with only 4 ingredients, completely hands off, and doesn’t need any babysitting.

This is a keeper! Whole family loved it. Thanks for the yummy, easy recipe!

Why I love Crockpot Ranch Chicken

  • Only 4 ingredients. Everything you need is easy to find and there’s very little measuring involved.
  • Almost no prep. Stir the sauce together, add the chicken, and let the slow cooker handle the rest.
  • Creamy and still has a ton of flavor. Ranch seasoning helps with adding the garlic, onion, herbs, and savory flavor to the creamy sauce.
  • Easy to serve multiple ways. We love it with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles to soak up the extra sauce.
  • Great for busy days. It cooks in 4 hours on low, so it’s an easy dinner to get going earlier in the day.

Ranch Chicken Crock Pot Ingredients

  • Dry ranch dressing mix – A packet of dry ranch seasoning does most of the heavy lifting here by adding herbs, garlic, onion, and plenty of flavor. I use Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning mix.
  • Cream of chicken soup – One can makes the base of the creamy sauce. You don’t need to dilute it before adding it to the slow cooker.
  • Chicken stock – This thins the condensed soup just enough to create a creamy sauce as the chicken cooks. You can also use chicken broth if that’s what you have.
  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts – You’ll want them to be roughly the same size so cut them down if they’re huge. You can also swap in boneless skinless chicken thighs if you want!

How to Make Crockpot Ranch Chicken

Detailed instructions and measurements to make Crockpot Ranch Chicken are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this page.

  1. Add the ranch seasoning mix, cream of chicken soup, and chicken stock to the slow cooker insert. Stir until combined.
  2. Add chicken to the crockpot and push to the bottom.
  3. Cook on low 4-6 hours until the chicken is cooked through.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

How to Serve Ranch Crockpot Chicken

This is one of those recipes that goes with just about everything, but here are our favorite ways to serve it:

Over rice – this is how we eat it most often. The sauce soaks into the rice and that’s when it gets really good.

Over egg noodles – based on the comments on this post, this might actually be the most popular way. The creamy sauce clings to the noodles perfectly.

Over pasta – penne or rotini hold up well with the thicker sauce.

Over mashed potatoes – spoon the chicken and sauce right over the top. This is the move when you want something more filling.

For sides, I usually go with roasted broccoli or a simple side salad. Cornbread on the side never hurts either, especiallly if you’re feeding a crowd.

You can also shred the chicken and use it for wraps, quesadillas, or on top of baked potatoes. It stretches further than you’d expect.

Tips for Making the Best Slow Cooker Ranch Chicken

Mix the sauce before adding the chicken. This is a step most people skip, and it matters. Combining the ranch seasoning, cream of chicken soup, and chicken stock before the chicken goes in makes sure every piece is evenly coated. If you just dump everything in, you’ll end up with dry spots and uneven flavor.

Don’t overcook it. A lot of recipes call for 8+ hours on low, and that’s almost always too long for boneless skinless chicken breast. Four to six hours on low is the sweet spot. Anything longer and the chicken dries out, even sitting in sauce. If your chicken is on the thinner side, check it closer to the 4 hour mark.

Use full fat cream of chicken soup. The reduced fat versions don’t create the same creamy sauce. The texture ends up thinner and a little grainy. Full fat gives you that rich, velvety consistency you want.

Check the internal temperature. You’re looking for 165°F in the thickest part of the breast. An instant read thermometer takes the guesswork out of it completely.

Consider cutting thick chicken breasts in half horizontally. If your chicken breasts are really large (over 8 ounces each), butterfly them or slice them in half so they’re more of an even thickness. This helps them cook more evenly and absorb more of the sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of ranch mix should I use?

This recipe for crockpot chicken is made with Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning. It is the one I’ve tested this recipe with the most and it consistently gives the best flavor. The store brand version from HEB works well too. Just make sure you’re using the dry seasoning packet, not the bottled dressing. One standard packet is all you need.

Is it better to cook chicken breast on high or low in crock pot?

Low, every time. Cooking on low for 4-6 hours gives you tender, juicy chicken that shreds easily. High heat cooks it faster but dries out the breast, even with the sauce. This is the biggest mistake I see people make with crockpot chicken. They crank it to high to save time and end up with tough, stringy meat.

Can you put frozen chicken in the crockpot?

You can, but the texture won’t be as tender as starting with thawed chicken. If you’re using frozen, add an extra 1-2 hours to the cook time and make sure the internal temperature reaches 165°F before serving it. Thawed chicken gives you a better result every time, so if you can plan ahead and move it to the fridge the night before, do that.

Can you use ranch dressing instead of ranch seasoning mix?

I don’t recommend it. Ranch dressing adds too much liquid and completely changes the consistency and taste of the sauce. It ends up thin and runny instead of thick and creamy. The dry seasoning packet gives you all the ranch flavor without the extra moisture. Stick with the packet for the best results.

Can you make ranch chicken with chicken thighs?

Yes, boneless skinless chicken thighs work well in this recipe. They’re a little more forgiving than breasts, so they’re harder to overcook. Reduce the cook time by about 30 minutes to an hour since thighs are usually smaller and cook a bit faster.

Can I add vegetables to this recipe?

You can. Broccoli is the most popular add in. Stir it in during the last 30-45 minutes so it cooks through without getting mushy. You could also add diced potatoes at the beginning of the cook time, or toss in frozen peas or corn in the last 15 minutes. Just keep in mind that adding a lot of vegetables will thin out the sauce slightly.

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat Crock Pot Ranch Chicken

Refrigerator: Store leftover ranch chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Make sure to include the sauce. It keeps the chicken moist when you reheat it.

Freezer: This recipe freezes well for up to 3 months. Let it cool completely, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Squeeze out as much air as you can to prevent freezer burn. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Reheating: The microwave works in a pinch. Just go 1 minute at a time and stir between rounds so it heats evenly. For the best results, reheat on the stovetop over medium-low heat with a splash of chicken stock to loosen the sauce back up. It’ll taste closer to fresh that way.

    1. Hi Tanya! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

Serving it over egg noodles is such a good idea. That’s one of my favorite ways to do it too. So simple and comforting.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review, and I love that it’s one you’ll be making again.

This is a keeper! Whole family loved it. The only change I made was to add a dash of black pepper. Thanks for the yummy, easy recipe!

    1. Hi Brooke,
To get similar results, you could use vegetable stock, bone broth, or water mixed with chicken bouillon. However, the chicken stock provides a flavor that’s hard to match, so the taste will vary slightly with substitutions.

      1. Hi Tiffany! You can definitely add broccoli. I’d recommend stirring it in during the last 30-45 minutes of cooking though so it doesn’t get mushy.

    1. Hi Sandy! This recipe works great with boneless skinless chicken thighs. Depending on how many/how much you may need to slightly lower the amount of time.

      1. Hi Judy! The recipe calls for 1/2 cup of chicken broth or stock. You can find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. Let me know if you have any other questions—happy to help!

        1. Hi Lisa, You technically can, but I don’t recommend it. While it will be enough to cook the chicken, there’s still a risk of food safety as well as it not having the same results. It’ll be thinner, won’t season it as well, and it adds quite a bit of moisture so it waters it down.

    1. Hi Deborah, It just gets added in to the recipe straight from the can. Don’t follow the directions on the can itself.

  2. So I wanted to add cream of mushroom soup to the chicken Crock-Pot meal the recipe that I got on your site is it okay that I do that? So the ingredients that I have from your website is cream of chicken soup a ranch seasoning packet chicken stock. I was just trying to give it a little bit more flavor but I don’t know if that would work in that dish or not please let me know

    1. Hi Jennifer, You can replace the cream of chicken with any flavor of “cream of” soup of your choice and follow the recipe as written for the rest of it.

  3. Has anyone made this recipe (the 3x amount) on high? How long did you cook it for? I cooked 3 lbs of fresh breasts (different recipe) last night in the slow cooker on HIGH for 4 hours and they were cooked perfectly.

    1. Hi Elgina, I would still recommend cooking for 4-6 hours on low for 3lbs depending on hot your specific crockpot cooks. Since you had experience with a previous recipe doing well with that amount for 4 hours, I would recommend the same here.

Made this tonight. I had Costco chicken and when I opened the package the usual large 2 chicken breasts turned out to be 3 somewhat small ones. I decided to set the time for 6 hrs at low and hope for the best. The only change I made was to add mushrooms because I wanted to use them up. This was delicious and I rarely feel that way about online recipes. My husband said make this any time. I put it over leftover rice. This is a real keeper and I will be making it often. Thank you for sharing this simple and scrumptious recipe

    1. Hi Brandy! I use an 8.5qt crockpot and it comes out just fine. I think it really depends on how large of a crockpot you’re looking to use.

    1. Hi Beth, I haven’t personally tried it in the Instant Pot yet. Sometimes the Instant Pot can be a bit finicky with cream soups and give burn notices. If I were to try it out, I’d start by bumping the broth amount up to 1 cup and cooking 10-12 minutes on high pressure and then depending on how that turned out, adjust from there.
