green bean casserole being scooped out of casserole dish

Adding Instant Pot Green Bean Casserole to your holiday food menu will help relieve the oven of its duties on the big cooking day. Whether its Thanksgiving or Christmas, oven time is precious!

This Instant Pot Green Bean Casserole is the taste you know and love, just in Instant Pot version. I’ve tried this out with both fresh and frozen, and they both work. I prefer frozen only for the sake of convenience and price. If you’re not into the “cream of” stuff, feel free to opt for the replacement of that.

Make Ahead Green Bean Casserole in Instant Pot

Yes, it can be. I’m still currently testing it out to see if it can be frozen, but it can be made a few days in advance. Just wait to place the topping onions until you’re ready to reheat and serve.

Storing and Reheating Green Bean Casserole

Leftover green bean casserole should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat leftover green bean casserole, I recommend adding it to a skillet or saucepan over medium heat until heated through, stirring occasionally.

You can also reheat it in the microwave and gently cover it with a paper towel.

Can green bean casserole be made and frozen?

Yes, you can make green bean casserole completely (omit the fried onions on top) and freeze it. When you’re ready to serve, allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven, adding the crispy fried onions on top.

Tips and Tricks for Green Bean Casserole in Electric Pressure Cooker

  • If you’re concerned about burn notice or seem to get a burn notice with your Instant Pot often, you can add the cream of mushroom after the pressure cooking time.
  • If you want convenience and price savings, opt for frozen green beans! They taste the same in the end if you ask me.
  • I personally like to transfer this to a casserole dish after cooking and then top it with fried onions. If you like them extra crispy, pop them under the broiler for 1-2 minutes.
  • If you like your green beans a little crispier, subtract a minute or two from the cooking time. If you like them extra soft (think the texture of canned green beans) add 4 minutes to the cooking time for fresh.
Is green bean casserole better with canned or fresh?

Whether you use canned or fresh is a completely personal preference. There is a texture difference between the two.

If you opt to use canned, your green beans will be softer in texture. If you use fresh, you’ll have more of a bite, crisp texture.

Either one is fine to use, just use the one that will give you the resulting texture you prefer.

How much water do I need to steam green beans in instant pot?

You will want to use at least 1 cup of liquid to steam green beans in the Instant Pot.

Why is my green bean casserole runny?

Green bean casserole can become runny if the frozen green beans had too much water content or if you added too much liquid.

Why is my green bean casserole so soupy?

Green bean casserole will be soupy if it hasn’t cooked completely or if there’s too much liquid.

Should frozen green beans be thawed before cooking?

For this recipe, the green beans do not need to be thawed before cooking. The water content of the frozen green beans will add to the liquid needed in the Instant Pot for cooking.

ALTERATIONS FOR PICKY EATERS

  • Go easy on the garlic powder. It adds a strong flavor.
