how to make easy breadsticks
Detailed instructions and measurements to make Parmesan Breadsticks are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
- Add the warm water, yeast and honey to a stand mixer bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it is nice and foamy.
- Once it’s foamy, add in the oil and pinch of salt. Mix to combine. Add in 2 cups of flour and mix with the dough hook. Once it’s combined, add in another cup of flour. Once that is combined, add in flour 1 tablespoon at a time until the dough is no longer sticky. Don’t use more than 1/2 cup additional flour.
- Continue using the dough hook and knead the bread in the mixer for about 3 minutes or until it’s smooth.
- Place your dough on an oiled baking sheet and shape into a rectangle (it doesn’t need to be perfect).
- Using a pizza cutter, score the dough into the breadstick shapes you would like. You don’t need to go completely through the dough to the baking sheet, but you’ll want to go most of the way.
- Place a kitchen towel over the dough and place the baking sheet in a warm place to rise for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F.
- Once the dough has risen, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, parmesan, oregano, and parsley.
- Brush the dough with the butter mixture.
- Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes, just until cooked through.
- Remove the breadsticks from the oven and brush with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle with additional coarse kosher salt if desired!
tips and tricks for garlic breadsticks
- When you add the yeast to the warm water it should foam. If it doesn’t foam, it means your yeast is not good any longer. You’ll need to start over with new yeast.
- Scoring the breadsticks isn’t required, it just makes them easier to pull apart.
- You can use a silicone baking mat in place of oil on the baking sheet if you prefer.
I love serving breadsticks with any meal that has a sauce, gravy, or with soups. They are perfect for soaking up the sauce.
It is likely due to one of two reasons. The first being that your yeast was bad. Unfortunately, that is common in the small packets and if it wasn’t stored properly. The second reason may be that your water temperature wasn’t correct. You don’t want it too hot or too cold. Luke warm (about 105°F) is best.
