Greek Chicken Bowls Recipe

Meal prep is always hit or miss for me. I love to do it, but if a recipe is too complicated, I am less inclined to try it again.

That’s why I always try to make sure any meal prep recipe I share on Sweetly Splendid is SUPER easy to make.

These turkey taco bowls are one of my favorite meal prep recipes, and they easily fit that criteria.

Recently I have been craving Mediterranean food, and that’s how I ended up with these Greek Chicken Bowls.

Why You’ll Love This Greek Chicken Bowl Recipe

There is a lot to love about these Greek Chicken Bowls.

  • Greek Chicken Bowls are incredibly easy to make. Promise!
  • They work well for a weeknight meal or lunch with friends.
  • A great recipe for meal prepping for the week
  • Each bowl can be customized to your liking.
  • A great healthy dinner idea

Ingredients

Here’s what you will need to pick up at the grocery store for this Greek power bowl recipe:

  • chicken breasts – In this recipe, I’ll show you how to make boneless skinless chicken breasts seasoned with Greek seasoning. However, you can also use ground chicken or ground turkey. I have also used leftover chicken kebabs, grilled chicken, and or a shredded-up rotisserie chicken for a shortcut.
  • avocado oil – You can also use extra virgin olive oil or vegetable oil.
  • Greek seasoning – Store-bought seasoning is great, or you can make your own homemade Greek seasoning
  • cooked orzo – My parmesan orzo is my favorite for this recipe. (And if you buy extra, you can make this orzo pasta salad another day.) No orzo? Use another small-shaped pasta or rice. Both white rice and brown rice work well. Use your favorite grain.
  • cherry tomatoes – Grape tomatoes will work just as well.
  • English cucumber – Feel free to use Persian cucumbers or a peeled and seeded standard American cucumber instead.
  • red onion – Substitute with shallot if you like. It has a milder flavor than red onion.
  • feta cheese – Feta is the most delicious Greek cheese, but you can use goat cheese or mozzarella if you prefer.
  • kalamata olives – Any kind of black olives will work.
  • tzatziki sauce – You can buy this creamy cucumber dill sauce pre-made or make your own homemade tzatziki. See the section below called “where to buy tzatziki sauce.” You can also substitute use your favorite Greek dressing or cucumber ranch
  • fresh herbs – I suggest fresh oregano, fresh dill and/or thyme.

Gluten-free Greek chicken bowls

If you are craving something lighter or need to skip the orzo for gluten reasons, you have a few options.

The first is to use a gluten-free orzo. There are a few brands out there that make this small rice-shaped pasta in GF form, including DeLallo.

Another idea is to skip the pasta entirely and use cauliflower rice.

You could also turn it into a salad and serve the chicken and toppings over a bed of spinach, romaine lettuce, or other leafy greens.

Meatless Greek bowls

This recipe makes a hearty, protein-rich vegetarian or vegan meal that works for dinner tonight or meal prep for the week.

For a meatless option, you can replace the chicken in this recipe with tofu or seitan. I bet these marinated grilled tofu kabobs would be fantastic.

If you’re making this recipe vegan, make sure to use a dairy-free yogurt when making your tzatziki sauce, or skip it and use your favorite vegan Greek dressing. You will also want to skip the feta and use crumbly vegan cheese instead.

Other topping ideas for easy greek chicken bowls

The best thing about these bowls is that they can be customized to your heart’s content! Here are some additional ideas for Greek toppings for chicken bowls:

  • Chickpeas (canned or roasted
  • Pickled baby beets
  • Lemon wedge (for lemon juice and lemon zest)
  • Pickled red onions
  • Green peppers, diced
  • Pepperoncini
  • Carrots
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Shrimp
  • Bell pepper
  • Warm pita bread or pita chips (bonus points if you have hummus to enjoy on the side!)

How to Make Greek Chicken Bowls

Ready to make these healthy Greek Chicken Bowls? Let’s go!

  1. First, add the avocado oil to a large skillet over medium high heat.
  2. Add the chicken that’s been cut into bite-size pieces and season with the Greek seasoning. Sear the chicken on all sides and cook through. Remove from the skillet
  3. Divide the chicken, orzo, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, feta, and kalamata olives between 4 bowls.
  4. Top each bowl with 3 tablespoons of tzatziki and fresh herbs.

My favorite containers to use for meal prep are these sturdy ones with lids. I love them because they stack well in the fridge and can be easily taken to school or work in a lunchbox.

Tips & Tricks for making Greek chicken meal prep bowls

If you are meal prepping, make sure to store the tzatziki separately and add it just before eating.

You can prep the entire bowl in advance, or prep the components and assemble them when ready to eat. Make sure to let cool completely before refrigerating so your food doesn’t wind up with condensation and excess water in your bowls.

Greek Chicken Seasoning

When making Greek chicken for your bowls, it’s important to season it with Greek seasoning.

Greek chicken seasoning contains a bevy of Greek spices, including garlic, basil, rosemary, oregano, and thyme.

When I have the time, I like to make my own Greek seasoning blend from spices in my pantry, but store-bought is totally great! My favorite brand of spices is Cavenders and they have a great-tasting Greek spice mix.

Whatever method you choose, you want your chicken to be super flavorful and you should always make sure your spices are fresh.

Yes, the goodies on your spice rack have expiration dates and can go rancid! If your spices look faded in color or have a bland or weird smell, they have likely passed their prime and should be replaced.

Where to buy tzatziki sauce

You can find tzatziki at most grocery stores. Look for it near the deli department in a refrigerated section that contains dips like hummus, guacamole, and salsa as well as sides like pasta salad and potato salad.

If you have a Greek, Turkish, or Middle Eastern grocery store near you — or even a restaurant that offers takeout — chances are good you can buy a tub of fresh tzatziki sauce to bring home.
